It’s a Great Day to be a Tiger!

OPERATIONS

Athletics - The Tiger athletic teams had another good week.  The Varsity Football team defeated J.Z. George 67-32 on Friday night.  On Tuesday night, all three of the Junior High/Junior Varsity teams defeated J.Z. George.  Junior High football will be traveling to Water Valley on September 14 and the Varsity team will take on Philadelphia in their first away matchup of the 2021-2022 season on Friday September 17th.  The Lady Tigers Volleyball team took on Yazoo County in a district matchup on the 9th and was victorious 3-0.  On Monday the 13th, they lost a close match to Winston Academy and will be traveling to Yazoo County for another district matchup on Tuesday, September 14th.

Transportation - Traffic safety is of great concern to all of us at WMCSD.  Please help us keep our students and employees safe by paying close attention to the officer directing traffic in front of Winona Elementary.  We ask that everyone put down their cell phones and observe his commands.  Keep in mind, the officer is having to watch for many things including students who are walking along a busy highway plus three lanes of traffic on Hwy 51.  Within a short distance, there is also traffic entering Hwy 51 from Hwy 407, from Powell Street, and from a daycare directly across the street from WES.  We thank you for your help in keeping our students safe when traveling to and from school.

Buildings/Maintenance - The Support Services building that houses the assistant superintendent, curriculum director/data specialist, exceptional education case manager, vocational rehabilitation coordinator, and child nutrition director got a new roof last week.

The Entegrity project is nearing completion as the remainder of the blinds are ordered and the metal panels for the hallway windows should be coming in at the end of September. The project included replacing all lighting throughout the district with LED bulbs, installing beautiful new windows at WSS, repairing three sections of the WSS roof, and installing all new HVAC systems at WSS.

Several capital improvement projects have been approved with JBHM Architecture including new HVAC systems at WES, repair to the interior walls at WSS, and repairs to roofs.  They will be developing the plans and assisting the WMCSD Board with the bidding process.  The first will be the roof at Knox Gym.  With the air conditioning project completed, the new roof will be essential to providing additional energy efficiency to the building.

COMMUNICATIONS

WES will be hosting parent meetings in the month of September. Parents of students in PreK, kindergarten, first and second grade will meet on Wednesday, September 15th. Parents of students in grades three through six will meet on Wednesday, September 22nd.  Topics for the parent meeting include PBIS, discipline, how to read student reports (STAR, i-Ready, and MAAP), and grading scales.
