Tiger with mouth open

It’s a Great Day to be a Tiger!

I think everyone enjoyed having a long weekend, but we are glad to be back at school and in our routines.  Parents should be looking for state test scores and back-to-school benchmark testing reports this week. The next regular meeting of the WMCSD Board of Trustees is Tuesday, September 14th at 6:00pm in the Superintendent’s Office conference room.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMING We are excited to offer after-school programs at both schools beginning in September. This is made possible through the federal ESSER funding given to schools to help educate students through the COVID-19 global pandemic.  Winona Elementary School’s program features extracurricular activities for students in grades 4 through 6 and academic tutoring for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.  The activities include music, art, dance/cheer/PE, robotics, archery, coping skills, and dyslexia therapy.  Students identified as needing extra academic instruction were notified by a letter sent home to parents.  The program began on September 7th. For more information, contact WES After-School Administrator Arica Anderson at 662-283-4129.

Winona Secondary School’s program will begin Monday, September 13th for grades 7 through 12. The programs available are academic tutoring and ACT preparation.  Parents will receive an information letter this week. For more information, contact WSS After-School Administrator Philip Harville at 662-283-1244.

OPERATIONS Your Winona Tigers won over 4A Newton County in a double-overtime thriller Friday night at home. We invite everyone to come out to Tiger field this Friday night to support the football team, band, and cheerleaders. The Tigers will host JZ George at home on Friday, September 10th at 7:00pm.  Tickets are $8.00 and are sold at the game.  Gates open at 6:00pm.  Children under 12 and must be accompanied by an adult.

The Lady Tiger Volleyball team is winning both on and off the court.  It always makes us proud when our students receive accolades for their behavior when they are out of town representing their school. Congratulations to these young ladies and their coaches for getting recognized for their outstanding behavior last week and for continuing to get those wins. They will be at home tomorrow night against Yazoo County. Come on out to the JJ Knox gym to support these student athletes. The Cross Country team did not complete this weekend, but will be at French Camp September 11th. Make the short ride over to FC to support your Tiger runners.

We are extremely thankful for every person and business that sponsors WMCSD athletic programs.  Our Platinum Sponsor is the Bank of Winona.  Gold Sponsors are Farm Bureau of Winona, Hammond’s Pharmacy, Kirk Auto Group, Kirk Powersports, and Bank of Kilmichael.  Silver sponsors are Dixie Roofing and Hi-Grade Farm Supply.  Hankins Lumber is a Bronze Sponsor.  A new permanent sign structure around the video board at Tiger Stadium should be in place by the September 24th football game.  The structure is being fabricated by our very own welding and automotive teachers and students at Winona Career and Technical Center with signs being provided by Graphix.  If you are interested in supporting Winona-Montgomery Athletics, please call Athletic Director Veronica Helms at 662-283.3601.

We are in need of substitute teachers.  Apply online at www.winonamontgomerycsd.com.  Click MENU at the top right of the main page and the EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES section will appear on the left column at the bottom of the black screen.  Click on “Apply Here” and follow the Applitrack process for setting up a username and password and apply for the position desired.  Should you have questions or need further information, please contact the Business Office at 662-283-3731.

COMMUNICATIONS WES will be hosting parent meetings in the month of September. Parents of students in PreK, kindergarten, first and second grade will meet on Wednesday, September 15th. Parents of students in grades three through six will meet on Wednesday, September 22nd.  Topics for the parent meeting include PBIS, discipline, how to read student reports (STAR, i-Ready, and MAAP), and grading scales.

HEALTH AND SAFETY   Parents, please remember that if your child develops symptoms, keep them at home and contact your medical provider.  If your child has a positive COVID test, inform the school by contacting the school nurse’s office at the number listed below.  Please note that we are unable to accept results from home test kits; only results from a licensed healthcare provider or pharmacist will be accepted.

  • Winona Elementary (Grades PreK-6) 283-4129 - Nurse Felisha Pitt
  • Winona Secondary (Grades 7-12)  283-1244 - Nurse Skyla McIntyre

Also, if your child receives a “Group Contact” letter, that does not mean to keep your child at home to quarantine. It simply means that a student in your child’s class has tested positive and that parents should monitor their child for COVID symptoms. You will be called by the school nurse if your child needs to quarantine.

The WMCSD COVID weekly report is released on our website and social media pages every Monday at 1:30pm. You may access the WMCSD Safe Return Plan 2021-2022 on the district website at winonamontgomerycsd.com or directly by going to https://5il.co/vpu7. We are so thankful for your support because it has allowed us to have school full-time and face-to-face with our Tigers.

TECHNOLOGY Students in grades 4-6 should check out the Robotics program at WES.

Stay healthy and choose joy! We are TIGERStrong!
