📚 Learning to Summarize! ✏️🖍️

Ms. Sara Cox’s 5th grade ELA students pulled out the markers and crayons and got creative while making their own anchor charts to help internalize the process of summarizing literary text!

Using Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then, students created a resource they can look back on each day as they practice identifying the most important parts of a story.

Mr. Edward Penn’s Visions students at Winona Lower and Upper Elementary Schools have been learning about the Revolutionary War era as America celebrates its 250th anniversary!

To wrap up their unit, students researched the pre-Revolutionary period and participated in a debate, taking on the viewpoints of either the Loyalists, who wanted to remain loyal to Great Britain, or the Patriots, who wanted independence and a new system of government.

What a great way to bring history into the classroom while building research, critical-thinking, and communication skills! 🇺🇸🐯

Literacy Coach Mrs. Emily Hunt teamed up with 5th Grade ELA teacher Ms. Sara Cox to plan a fun and engaging Gallery Walk for her students!

After reading and discussing a text together, students partnered up and hit the pod! 🚶‍♀️🚶 Questions were placed throughout the area, and at each stop, students had to analyze the question, return to the text, use their reading strategies, and find text evidence to support their answer. 🔎📖

Movement + teamwork + critical thinking = a great day of learning! ❤️🖤

📚🐯 Learning Together in 4th Grade ELA!

Mrs. Serena Bramlett’s 4th grade ELA students had a special lesson with our elementary Literacy Coach, Mrs. Emily Hunt! Mrs. Bramlett invited Mrs. Hunt to model a lesson focused on the important skill of summarizing informational texts.

Students used chants and hand motions as memory aids to help reinforce important academic vocabulary. Mrs. Hunt then modeled the summarizing process and guided students as they put their learning into practice.

Using strategies they’ve learned for identifying the main idea and key details, students worked to create strong summaries of the text. ✏️📖

We love seeing our teachers and instructional coaches collaborate to give our Tigers engaging learning experiences and strategies they can use throughout the year! ❤️🖤
