Winona Junior High School student, Cameron Singh, did something that most students his age would not attempt to do.  Cameron took the ACT for the first time as a seventh grader and made a 23 on it!

This accomplishment is not surprising at all because Cameron has high aspirations.  His future plans are to be an Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineer. He knows that in order to achieve this goal, he has to work hard in the classroom now.

According to his seventh grade math teacher Mrs. Deanna Lowery, Cameron continually asked for harder assignments throughout the year.  She assigned him higher level math problems on their Delta Math software.  He often sought the help of the math academic coach, Andrew Wilson, and the geometry teacher Brad Cook for additional help.  

Cameron took the ACT at the encouragement of his teachers, Mrs. Lowery and Mr. Wilson. They felt it would be a good experience and would help him gain an understanding of what to expect when taking it in the future. 

All of Cameron’s hard work paid off when he took the ACT this past summer.  At only thirteen years old, Cameron scored a 27 on his Math section, a 24 in Science, 23 in Reading, and 18 in English.

Cameron’s mother received the email with his score, and she excitedly shared it with him.  Cameron said they were both relieved and excited to find out the good news. His goal was to make an 18 on his first attempt and surpassed that by five points!

Singh thanks his teachers, Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Lowery,for pushing him to do his best work and encouraging him throughout the process.  

His words of advice for another middle school student wanting to take the ACT were, “Take it and when you take it again you will recognize the format and have better time management, since time plays such a big role in taking the ACT!  I had 30 minutes for 60 questions in the English section.”

Mr. Wilson, Cameron’s current 8th grade teacher, is extremely impressed with his work ethic, determination and desire to learn. “Cameron is one of the hardest working students I know and consistently challenges himself to go above and beyond what is expected of him.”

Mrs. Lowery was very complimentary of Cameron’s leadership abilities in her seventh grade classroom as well.  She said that the students in his class looked up to him and knew that he was a peer that they could ask for help. “Cameron is very good at helping others.  He doesn’t just give them the answers.  He makes them understand the problem to solve it on their own.”

The Winona-Montgomery School District is very proud of Cameron Singh and his achievement on the ACT! We look forward to spotlighting future students as they excel on the ACT as well. As always, it’s a great day to be a Tiger!
