Winona High School has named Edward Townsel as Men's Head Basketball Coach for the 2026-2027 School Year
Edward Townsel is a veteran basketball coach with over a decade of experience building successful programs and developing student-athletes on and off the court. A former four-year Division I player at Arkansas State University, Townsel brings high-level playing experience that shapes his coaching philosophy and leadership approach.
He began his coaching career at Starkville High School. The same program where he once played and won a state championship as a senior. He served seven years as an assistant coach in one of the state’s premier programs. During that time, the team made three consecutive state championship appearances, winning back-to-back titles and finishing runner-up in the third.
Townsel later became head coach at Aberdeen High School, where he led a major turnaround. Taking over a program that had not had a winning season since 2014–2015 or a playoff win since 2015–2016, he guided Aberdeen from a 0–25 record to its first winning season in nearly a decade, along with a district regular season and tournament championship and a home playoff victory, culminating in a second-round playoff appearance.
His program philosophy emphasizes academics before basketball, discipline, grit, accountability, and relationship building, guided by core values of joy, compassion, competition, and trust.
Townsel will also coach Winona High School's inagural E-sports team for the 26-27 School Year.
