Tiger with mouth open

WINONA-MONTGOMERY CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT

COVID-19 Update 03.23.2020 Day 6 of School Closure

TIGER Parents and Families

This is a challenging time for all of us, but take a deep breath and know we can do this!  I urge you take care of yourself so you can be at your best for your child and family. I hope you will pace yourself as you work through issues related to social distancing and show yourself and others grace as we are all adjusting.  I’m sure we will need to remind ourselves to be positive, patient, and kind from time to time.

We know you have many questions, and we will provide you with information as it becomes available.  We also know how important your child’s education is to you and want to provide you with ideas for how to keep him/her busy and learning during the school closure.

At-Home Learning Resources

WES, WSS, and WCTC teachers are sharing their favorite at-home resources for you to use with your child.  More information will be shared as soon as the lists are available.

At-Home Learning Activities

WMCSD teachers are also working on At-Home Learning Activities to share with our students and families.  It takes lots of work to put together grade-level work that can be done independently. We understand that this time away from school is difficult for students, and we do not expect them to be working on “school work” for several hours a day.

We are not requiring students to complete any assignments, and no at-home activities will be graded.  WMCSD’s at-home learning activities are an effort to give our students opportunities to continue learning during the state-mandated school closure.

ALL Students:

  • Should READ every day.  This includes being read to, being read with, and/or reading alone. There are lots of free books available online, but there are also books, magazines, newspapers, and cookbooks in your house.
  • Should WRITE every day.
  • Need to get some EXERCISE every day. Move to Learn is a great resource for “brain breaks” and getting kids moving.

Older students:

  • READ everyday
  • WRITE everyday - your personal account and description of your challenges and victories during this challenging time in history will be a primary source for future generations. You could write this in a journal or create a written or video blog.
  • Create something - a poem, song, story, drawing, painting
  • iReady and Edgenuity are available to students in grades (7-8)
  • USA Test Prep is available to 7th grade, 8th grade, and students in Foundations to Biology, and Biology I.
  • Common Lit is available to 7th graders
  • Research topics that interest you and write about what you learn.
  • Research careers that align with things that you like to do or skills that you already have or are interested in developing.
  • Learn some life skills - cooking, cleaning, organizing, balancing a checkbook, filling out a resume, preparing for an interview, planning meals for a week, managing your time...these things will help you in the future.
  • Improve some skills that you already have like typing, coding, playing an instrument, singing, dancing, drawing.
  • Coming Soon...Check the website for resources and activities - winonamontgomerycsd.com

Younger Students:

  • READ everyday
  • WRITE everyday
  • Create something - a poem, song, story, drawing, painting
  • iReady is available to students in grades (K-6)

WMCSD Teachers are the BEST!

Beginning April 1, 2020, your child’s teacher(s) will be available at least 3 days a week during a 2-hour time block to answer questions and/or offer support if needed via one of the following methods:

  • Email
  • Phone
  • Video conferencing

Your child’s teacher(s) will communicate their times and schedules to you next week through SchoolStatus.  Our goal is to build relationships that will benefit our students, families, and teachers for years to come.  We are #TIGERStrong.

FREE Wi-fi Access

We understand not every child has access to wifi or a device, but we want to work to support our families and their at-home learning experiences.  We will be offering wi-fi to students in the Winona Secondary School parking lot.

  • Hours available are from 7:00am - 7:00pm each day.
  • All users are to stay in their vehicles at all times.
  • The parking lot will be under surveillance at all times by either cameras, school resource officers, and/or local law enforcement.
  • Data will be collected by the district’s server regarding sites visited and activities engaged in by users.
  • Signal strength is determined by the number of users.
  • The rules are posted at www.winonamontgomerycsd.com/FreeWifiRequirements and must be strictly adhered to at all times.
  • Anyone found violating the rules will be banned from using the free wifi service.
  • The password is TigerStrong.
